El Niño is strengthening heading into the 2026–27 season, and forecasters expect it could become a strong event. El Niño shifts rainfall and temperature patterns around the world, bringing drought to some regions and heavy rain and flooding to others. For many companies, this can mean lower water availability at some sites, floods and disruptions at others, and pressure on agricultural and raw material supply chains, sometimes within the same year.
In this session, Waterplan Senior Water Advisors Oswaldo Nuño and Hemant Servia will explain why El Niño happens and how it differs from long-term climate trends, which regions and sectors could be most exposed this season, and how companies are preparing their sites and supply chains, from monitoring early signals to adapting water sourcing and contingency plans.
